Another step...

We did it!
Another step towards toddlerville!
:)
That's right, I'm talking about how we've taken away our daughter's "soosie."

Well....... almost.

We are down to having the soother for just naps and bedtime.
This is a big deal because, yes, I was one of 'those moms' who let her baby have her "soosie" in her mouth all day long.

It was just easier. A LOT easier. Our third child is well... let's just call her sensitive. The soother seemed to, well, sooth her.

Also, another big plus to the soother was the fact that my baby puts EVERYTHING in her mouth. My philosophy has been at least with the soother in her mouth she couldn't suck on the cart at Walmart!

Truthfully I didn't come to this decision on my own. Lately I've been getting comments from complete strangers, comment like "Oh, I'm sure you'll be getting rid of that pretty soon!" I started to feel a bit like maybe we should be!

Funny how comments from complete strangers can pressure you to do something that maybe you realize you should have done on your own in the first place.

I had really been dreading the transition because, to be honest, I wasn't prepared to listen to whining all day. I thought that that was going to be my sentence. But boy was I wrong! Our littlest has been in the BEST mood all day! No whining! And actually she has been all smiles all day! Woohoo!

Isn't it funny how worried you are to take something away from your child (be it the bottle, crib, soother) and then find that transition is not at all what you thought it would be? Dare I say- even easy?
I find that for me the build up and worry about how terrible it will be is worse than the actual transition. My kids have definitely surprised me.

Now, don't get me wrong, I know that every kid is different, as is every situation. Transitions can be easy, but they can also be very hard. Take potty training my two year old for example. Not easy. Not fun. And a whole lot harder and more frustrating than I ever thought possible.

Can anyone relate? Do your kids surprise you with how they adjust to things? Whether that adjustment is easier or harder than you imagined?

On another really exciting note, taking away her soother seems to have fixed something else I've been worried about. Our little one has never been much of a talker. She says simple words like "mama" and "dada" and "nigh nigh" but truly her vocabulary is no where near where it should be.

Is it sad that it never once occurred to me that the two might be related?!
Now, in hindsight, it sure makes sense. Of course she won't be talking up a storm when she has a soother in her mouth 90% of the time!

Since I've taken it away during the day she has been a non stop chatter box. Really she is so full of smiles and has been talking ALL.DAY.LONG!
Now if only we could figure out what she is saying :)

Yup, it looks like things are going to be a whole lot louder around here. And I'm ok with that as long as it's 18 month old chatter and not 18 month old screeching!

Now... to build up enough courage to take it away at night!

  1. It seems we're facing the same crossroads! I only let Karsyn have his soother in the crib! And I'm worried about taking it away completly!
Cohen did surprise me with how well he delt with it, when we took it away, so I'm hoping Kar does the same!

  2. oh, all the fun things to look forward too!

I've heard from folks in our small group that each kiddo is different in their transitions, and they have been surprised by their kids many times!

  3. Well done - Mama and S! I'm glad the transition was a seemingly gentle one. And that is so great she is verbalizing more now too (I wouldn't have made that connection before either!).

Pat yourself and her on the back and I'd say give her a bit of time before tackling nighttime.

P.s. very cute shot of a very cute (sootherless) smile!

  4. Yeah! That is great! I remember when we took G's soother away. We only had let him have it when we were out (less mouthing things like you said) & nap times. I wondered what he would do when baby came if it took a soother - baby did & G didn't care to have one at all! (He's a big brother you know!). That's fabulous! And yeah to more talking!

  5. Good Work Girl!! We also took another step to toddlerville! Cutie had her first night in her big girl bed and is taking her first afternoon nap in it as I type! So far so good! Had a little tear last night though! It's all good though, I know our family is exactly as it should be! :)

  6. good job mommy!

but we called it a shusha (pronounced-shoe shuh).

it has been a long time since i have been in toddlerville.

besides how stinkin cute and squishy my kids were, i can't say i miss it at all.

my third child is still loud. she's cute too, which is luck for her!

  7. Yep...transitions are tricky. My middle son would not drink for five months when we took away his bottle. He simply did not want to drink from the sippy cup. But he finally did though.

So, naturally, when we potty trained this same child I was nervous about it. And he potty trained in three days. That was it. It truly was a surprise!
