Family Rules

I am so excited to finally share our 'Family Rules' canvas with you!
TA-DAAAAAA!
After completely falling in love with this crazy-awesome project
I spent the better part of the last week slowly working on completing our own.

To start with, we sat down as a family and wrote out some rules.
I also stole a few of Nicole's. They were just too good-
I mean how can you pass up:

"Husbands hug your wife Daily. Wife always take his side" or
"Encourage your siblings. Share in their joy" ?!
;)

Anyways, after deciding on our rules I got to work making our canvas.
I have to admit it took a little longer than I expected.
But I think the only reason it did was because I battle perfection.

That's right. It's a battle.
And in the end I came out of this battle truly loving what I made.

But what I love even more than the actual canvas is how our six year old has responded to it.
Seriously. It's amazing.

It's almost as if now he knows exactly what is expected of him. Go figure?
(I think a big part of it was how excited he was to have rules up on the wall
just like he does at school!)

If he breaks a rule we simply go into the dinning room and read it together.
Let's say he starts whining about something. We go in and read the rules and when we get to "Ask first. No whining. No attitude."

He says "Oh ya. I forgot. Sorry mama." He then takes his discipline (usually a time-out) with no whining and no attitude.

And that's the end of it.

Normally it would be a big battle of wills. Me against the whining.
Now that we have this rules board, he simply recognizes that his behavior goes against our rules and changes right away.
Crazy!
He's also very good at reminding his sisters of the rules too :)

And I have to admit I've really had a good time with the 'tickle lots' rule.
"Sorry" I say when he's giggling and begging me to stop
"What can I do? It's a rule!"

I really do love how it turned out. I love the homemade feel
and I really enjoyed making it.
It is more than I expected in every way!

  6. I love your family rules (I'm visiting from The Pleated Poppy). Your "tummy to the table" is being adopted in my home ... that's a great saying for the little ones!

  7. This is great! Yours turned out super cute! For my husband/wife rule I am putting: "Husband, create with her. Wife, nurture him too." And I am doing tummy to the table as well!

Good job! I can't wait to do mine!

  8. OK, a few questions: where did you buy the canvass? And did you use a printer or write the rules out?

  9. Hey Wendy,
    Canvas is from Micheals.
For the rules (because my canvas was so big) I had to hand write them. I wrote them up on the computer in different fonts and then just copied them free hand onto the scrapbook paper.
    :)
