Turkey Tackle

Yesterday, we celebrated our Canadian Thanksgiving.

And I made the turkey.

For the first time.

Ever.

Yes, I know it's sad that I've been married 9 years and that this is the first turkey I've ever made.
My only excuse is, well, it's pretty lame.... intimidation.

Yup, I'll admit it, I was majorly intimidated by that bird!

The thought of cleaning it out (neck and giblets= yuck in my books) and the knowing how long to cook it and the biggie- not making my guests violently ill....well, it all just proved to be too much for this mama to bear.

Until yesterday that is.

I decided to face my fears. Bite that bullet and make that silly ol' turkey.

And you know what? I discovered it's not that bad. Really. A little stressful, yes, but all in all not that bad.

Pulling out the turkey neck and giblets. Cleaning out the cavity. Stuffing it with dressing. Slathering it with butter and roasting him up. All- not that bad. Dare I say, even a little easy??

Now, I totally underestimated how long it would take. We were a couple hours behind and ended up eating at 7pm, rather than my planned 5pm. Oh well, I'll know better for next time!

But people- my turkey. Mmmm..... rather tasty if I do say so myself! Hooray for success :)

AND after giving leftovers to my dad, in-laws, sister and brother-in-law, I still have enough to make oh, another 3-4 meals!
Hello turkey soup, turkey sandwiches, turkey casserole and turkey pot pie!

So, I'm here to tell you, if you haven't tackled a turkey yet- do it!
I promise, it's easier that you think!

Gobble gobble.

(p.s I'm sad I don't have a picture to show... in the chaos of trying to get it out of the oven, carved and served before all my family starved, I forgot to take a picture. Boohoo. It really was a pretty sight, though.)

  1. I will sheepishly admit I have yet to cook a bird myself as well. We have so much family in the city I'm usually tasked with things like bringing a salad or a vegetable dish.

Great job though! I'm super impressed :)

p.s. saw your post below - I saw Blue Man Group in a different city and agree...it was phenomenal! Not at all what I was expecting and came away just gushing!! Glad you had such a great evening out!!

  2. Congrats on making a turkey!! I have yet to tackle one myself... but if we're here for our Thanksgiving in November, I might just give it a try.

All this talk about turkey and leftovers is making me hungry :-)
