Homemade Playdough

A few years ago we received a HUGE set of playdough. HUGE.
After that we always seemed to have plenty to go around. Somehow, though, over time the colors "magically" got mixed together and some of the lids didn't get put on properly. My three year old was also really good at getting into the playdough no matter how hard I tried to "hide" it. It's like she could just sniff it out and on more than one occasion I found her in a sea of playdough. Fun times.

I got to my breaking point after one such occasion and decided to just throw out all our playdough and made a plan to simplify our supply and make a batch of our own.
When I was little we always made our own playdough. I remember helping my mom mix and knead the dough and then taking turns deciding which koolaid flavor to use.

I suppose enough time has passed for me to forget about the playdough mess, because yesterday we decided to make our very first batch of homemade playdough.
Unfortunately I didn't have a copy of the recipe my mom used, so I went searching on the internet and found a fabulous tutorial. And the best part was that I had everything I needed!
It's super easy and only took about 10 minutes to whip up and the kids had just as much fun making it as they did playing with it :)
......and the mess wasn't that bad. Only a few pieces on the floor ;)

Homemade Playdough
(from Homemade by Jill via Skip to my Lou)

1 cup flour
1 cup warm water
2 tsp cream of tarter
1 tsp oil
1/4 cup salt
food coloring

Combine all ingredients (except food coloring) in a medium saucepan.
Stir over medium heat until smooth.
Stir continuously until the dough balls (about 1-2 minutes)
Remove from heat.

When dough is cool enough to handle, knead until smooth.
Form into a ball. Divide into as many colors as you want. A single batch makes a good amount of 4 colors.
Add and knead food coloring to the divided dough.
Store in separate airtight containers until ready to use.

Have fun!
