Bug Facts

'Cuz I know you've all been dying to find out. Here are the answers to our little quiz:
1. Is a spider an insect? Why/why not?
Nope! Insects have six legs and three body parts. Spiders have eight legs and 2 body parts.
2. What is it called when you have a fear of spiders?
Arachnophobia. It is one of the most common fear among humans. (raise your hand if you fall into this category :)
3. How often do most spiders make webs?
Webs get dirty and torn so most spiders make a new one everyday. Don't worry though- they don't waste the old one, nope, they roll it into a ball and eat it. Yum :)
4. How many eyes do bees have?
Five! Two compound eyes and three tiny ocelli eyes. Freaky!
5. What are the three kinds of bees in the hive?
Queen, worker and drone. The queen and worker bees are female and the drone bees are male.
6. Do female or male bees have a stingers?
Female. Watch out boys!
7. How many stomachs do bees have?
Two. One stomach for eating and one special stomach for storing nectar.
8. How long is the average life cycle of a honeybee during the working season?
Three to six weeks. Crazy.
9. An ant can lift_______ times it's own body weight.
20 times. If a second grader was as strong as an ant he could lift a car!!! (My little second grader was very impressed by this fact!)
10. How do ants hear?
Ants don't have ears. They "hear" by feeling vibrations on the ground through their feet.

Looks like Sylvia is the smartypants and has bragging rights!
